Permaculture
Forests are amazing things. They grow themselves, provide for their own air conditioning, heal themselves, provide food and housing for everything that lives in them... An intact ecology is whole and has everything invented and thought out. A forest uses the most advanced bioremediation methods available to clean water. Everything about forests and their design are permanent. Their permanence ensures that there will always be something available for its inhabitants as long as they give something back.
On a practical level, there are valuable lessons we can take from the forest and apply to our lives and careers. We can observe the distinct patterns that define the permanence of a forest and integrate them into our way of living, into our communities, and to our industries.
Permaculture Defined
Permaculture, which is a shortened form of permanent culture, is a practical and scientific design system for the harmonious integration of natural systems with human habitat and land use through patterns from nature. Permaculture is concerned with the simple and practical steps leading to the design and planning of self-sufficient resilient human systems be them industrial, economic, our communities or our households.
The concept and practice of permaculture was coined by Bill Mollison and David Holgrem in the 1970's as a practical and accessible way forward to addressing the challenges the modern industrial system has placed on the natural environment and society.

Big Sky Permaculture was created in August 2009 to bring the practice of permaculture design and education to Calgary and Alberta.
Big Sky Permaculture is dedicated to providing education and capacity-building in permaculture to empower an increasing number of community members in making sustainable and resilient decisions for their homes and lives. We offer high-quality courses and workshops with trained and enthusiastic instructors with world-wide experience.
